Coronation Street is being applauded for its upcoming gay storyline.  

Teenager Todd Grimshaw - played by hunky Bruno Langley - will be the first gay character on the show since it began in 1960.

Bruno is delighted that the storyline - which sees Todd fall in love with his girlfriend Sarah Platt's older brother Nick - will address the issue of sexuality in such a sensitive way. 

In an episode to be screened in October - viewers will see Todd kiss Nick as he dozes off on the sofa after a lad's night out.

Bruno explains, "They've had a few drinks and Todd feels so close to Nick that he can tell him anything. He feels like it's the right thing to do to kiss him.

"It's dramatic new territory both for me and the programme."

Adam Mattera - who edits gay magazine Attitude - has praised Corrie for the brave new plot line.

He says, "It's great to see a gay character finally appearing. It brings the soap right up to date."
