Will Young - Artist of the Year 2003
Wednesday 03 December 2003

Will Young has been voted Artist Of The Year at the International Music Awards 2003.  The event took place at The End on 2 December.  This follows being voted Best Breakthrough Artist earlier this year by Radio One listeners.

It has been an amazing week for Will - his new single Leave Right Now went straight in at number one in the charts.  Will has now notched up four number ones out of the five singles he has released.

First day sales of the new single hit a staggering 40,000.  According to HMV this is the strongest first day of any single released this year.

During mid-week many stockists were reporting they had run out.  Regardless, by the end of the week a staggering 117,702 copies had been sold, this makes Leave Right Now the second biggest single of the year!!

The only bigger selling first week this year was Spirit In The Sky by Will's Pop Idol chum Gareth Gates which sold an amazing 273,508 in its first week, back in March.

Even though Leave Right Now was released too late in the year to qualify for ITV's Record Of The Year shortlist (based on the 20 best selling records this year), Will has been asked to perform his new single on the results show this Saturday, 6 December.  The organisers felt it was too good a single not to be included in some shape or form.

Will's new album "Fridays Child" was released this week.  If its as good as Leave Right Now it is sure to be a popular stocking filler this Christmas!
