Freedoms is the world's largest free condom and lube
distribution service, bringing free condoms to gay men in
gay venues throughout London.
Freedoms packs, which
each contain two very high-quality strong condoms and two
sachets of lube, are now available exclusively in over 150
gay bars, clubs, saunas and health centres within the M25.
The scheme, which was launched in June 2000, is a
collaborative venture between the Gay Men's Team in the
Health Promotion Service of Camden and Islington Community
Health Services NHS Trust and the Healthy Gay Living Centre
(HGLC).
The scheme is funded by the London health authorities. And
Freedoms is also a registered charity.
The scheme is managed in the offices of the Gay Men's Team
at St Pancras Hospital.
It is operated on the ground by the gay venue outreach teams
from the Healthy Gay Living Centre in south London and
Central London Action on Street Health (CLASH) in north
London.
Between them, CLASH and HGLC have ten years of experience of
outreach work to gay venues in London. They are the two
largest gay outreach teams in the country.
CLASH and HGLC distribute at least 1.2 million condoms
and the same number of sachets of lube to gay venues every
year.
With the help of donations, sponsorship and fundraising they
hope to increase those figures to 2 million every year.
