Amyl
Nitrate is more commonly known as Poppers. Poppers
come in small bottles which pop open - hence the
name. They are filled with liquid chemicals
called alkyl nitrites. They were used at the turn of
the century for people suffering from chest pains.
Nitrites like Amyl Nitrite dilate the blood vessels
and allow more blood to get to the heart.
They are usually sniffed straight from the bottle
and deliver a short, sharp high. Poppers are sold in
sex shops, clubs and gay bars. |

It is illegal to sell amyl nitrites if they are to be
inhaled, as this would then be termed a medicine and should
be controlled under the Medicines Act.
However there is a loophole in the law that allows those
selling amyl nitrites to escape prosecution on the basis
that they are being sold as room deodorisers and not
medicines.
