Geordie
lad Charlie is the youngest of four brothers. Born in
Newcastle he spent his formative years there, moving to the Lake
District as a teenager when his mum remarried. He
himself was married to actress Katharine Towne, daughter of
screenwriter Robert Towne, until 2002.
Following a stint in Byker Grove Charlie
got his big break when he erupted onto our TV screens in
1999 as Nathan Maloney in Channel 4's hit drama Queer As
Folk. His role as 15 year old Nathan meant he
featured in one of the most controversial sex scenes ever to
be screened on UK television.
Nathan played such an integral role in the groundbreaking
series that he became something of a role model for gay
youths. The influence of the series was so far-reaching that
Charlie was asked to participate in a parliamentary debate
about the discriminatory age of consent laws.

Since the good old days on Canal Street Charlie has gone on
to do something most British actors only dream off - he has
made it into Hollywood. In 2002 he starred alongside
Katie Holmes in the suspense thriller Abandon. His
next lead role was in Nicholas Nickleby next he starred
alongside Jude Law in the drama Cold Mountain.
Most recently Charlie has starred in Green Street Hooligans,
where he has a leading role alongside Elijah Wood in
this film about British football hooligan culture.
